The Los Angeles County Alliance for Boys & Girls Clubs is a collaborative of 26 member organizations representing 140 different Boys & Girls Club locations in Los Angeles County serving over 140,000 boys and girls ages six to 18. It is the mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
It is the vision of Boys and Girls Clubs of America to be the leading provider of out-of-school STEM education. BGCA recently signed the Space Act Agreement with NASA to promote STEM education throughout the country and is currently developing STEM programming within a social, cultural and global context for the success of disadvantaged youth and young women for Boys and Girls Clubs in the US and international locations.
At a Los Angeles County level, we are already leveraging our local club successes in STEM programming to raise outcomes for all Alliance clubs and link STEM education providers, funders and stakeholders. Our STEM initiative aligns with many funding priorities in the areas of education and workforce development as well as those addressing socio-economic disparities and gender equality issues.
Through roundtables and training events, the LA Alliance is joining with corporate and non-profit organizations including colleges and universities to connect LA’s kids to STEM careers through out-of-school time structured programs. Many of our clubs already offer STEM programs such as NASA’s Best and Underwater Robotics, and Lego Robotics.
We are currently piloting the following innovative STEM programs:
